Process for illegitimate birth recorded at baptism around 1800 in Mearns
« on: Monday 16 September 19 10:52 BST (UK) »
On the baptism record for John Findlay born Mearns 1800, his mother is Margaret Russell and his father is John Findlay. The record states that he is illegitimate.

Can anyone elaborate on the process of recording illegitmate births at that time and where I may be able to find further records, eg where father's of illegitimate children were officially acknowledged?

As far as I'm aware the father had to be present for his name to be included which was the fathers own acknowledgement of paternity.

Are you looking for records which show whether he had to contribute to the child's support?

Looking at the Scotlands People website which is the main source of Scottish records - I can’t see any mention of bastardy or other such records.  However, somebody with more knowledge of Scottish records may have more info on the subject
