Looking for baptism / parents of William Street
« on: Monday 30 September 19 10:47 BST (UK) »
William Street was a private in the Sussex Fencible Cavalry in 1799 according to the baptism record of his daughter Mary. Mary was baptised on 6 Oct 1799 at Goodramgate, York. The record says she is his first child, her motheer was Little late Dixon and she was born on 2 August.

I have found several more children with parents William and Little in Sussex and think they may be all one family
Frances Street  bapt 10 Sep 1808 Ferring,Sussex
Ann Street  bapt 10 Sep 1808 Ferring
Sarah Street  bapt 17 Apr 1814 East Preston, Sussex
Martha Street bapt  14 Jan 1816 East Preston
James Street bapt 27 Feb 1817 South Stoke,Sussex
William Street bapt  27 Feb 1817 South Stoke
Ellen Street  bapt 7 Feb 1820 South Stoke

I have a marriage in Dumfries in 1798 for William and Little

I have a DNA match with a descendant of a William Street b abt 1817/18 who gave one of his sons Little as a middle name, but the child's mother's maiden name was Carpenter. So I think this William Street is the son of Little Dixon.
I have found William and Little in Sussex on the 1851 census, he says he was born in Warningcamp, Sussex abt 1779.
Can anyone find baptism and parents for William snr please.

I cab find a baptism for William Street 6 June 1779 in Lyminster (Warningcamp was a tithing in Lyminster) on both FindMyPast and FreeReg. Neither entry has any details of the parents. There do not appear to be any other Strret baptisms in Lyminster around that time.

Thank you, looks a strong possibility. Shame about the lack of parents and potential siblings. I am hoping that he was the son of either William or John Street of Chiddingfold Surrey. Their sister was my direct ancestor and moved from Surrey to Pulborough Sussex.

If not then the DNA match is with another branch of my tree. But that was the best chance because of surnames matching and location.

Just found the image of that baptism on Familysearch, I wondered if it was so faint it couldn't be read, but it is reasonably clear. No sign of parents.

Perhaps the vicar jotted it down on a post-it note and forgot the names of the parents when he came to write it in the register later.

It looks like John Street died in Chiddingfold, Surrey in 1778 (buried 11 Aug 1778). There is a marriage in Dunsfold to a Mary Child, who I believe is the sister of Thomas Child, who married Elizabeth Street (John's sister and my 4 x great grandmother). Haven't tracked William's marriage (if he did marry) yet.

Could this be the marriage

William Street, Soldier/Little Dickson 6 October 1798 Dumfries

Don't know if this link will work but it's on FindMyPast and fs

yes, that matches with baptism of first child and Little was born in Scotland according to 1841 census. He married at 19. Presumably posted to Scotland, then to York and back to Sussex by 1808.

I've now got 3 more children to fill the gap between Mary and Ann, they are David, Elizabeth and Little in Goring, Sussex

Free reg confirms the two pairs of baptisms were both sets of twins
