Profession (annotation?) in the 1901 census
« on: Wednesday 02 October 19 15:31 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me decipher the profession of Walter F Weedon at 4 Woodland Villas, Chislehurst, in the 1901 census, please? I’m quite sure it says “Artist” as the main entry, but there’s another word above it that I can’t make out. If it helps, the 1939 Register has him as “Commercial Artist Retired”.

Ancestry link is https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/61596/TNA_R39_1284_1284C_015/13529197 and hopefully I’ve managed to attach a screenshot too.

Thanks!

Kake

If you look at the whole page there are a few instances, like this one, where the occupation has been overwritten with another word. For instance at the top of the page the word 'laundress' has been overwritten with the word 'Wash'.
This is where, after the census page was written up, someone went through it extracting information for statistical purposes, in some cases writing the occupational classification over the original word.
I think what has happened in Walter's case is that originally what was written was simply 'artist' and this has been placed in the occupational classification of 'Sculptors, Painters, Engravers, (Artists)', hence the word 'Sculp' written over 'Artist'

The annotations were usually done in a different colour.
Example here http://www.rootschat.com/links/02fc/

If you look at the whole page there are a few instances, like this one, where the word has been overwritten with another. For instance at the top of the page the word 'laundress' has been overwritten with the word 'Wash'.

The full classification for 'Wash' was 'Washing and Laundry Services' http://www.rootschat.com/links/01og9/

Thank you Jen! That makes things much clearer. What a shame we only have B+W digitisations of the earlier censuses.
