Glad to have been able to help. If you decide to get the birth certificates make sure you get them from the GRO (£7 for a pdf online copy and £11 paper) rather than a subscription site.

It could be that they never married as there is no record on FreeBMD. Perhaps they just said they were married and gave a date before the birth of the first child.

That could definitely be a possibility, his son (my great grandfather) did the exact same thing so I wouldn't be surprised!

Ali, Richard is mentioned in several newspaper reports in the 1920s and 1930s, have you seen them?

Yes haha I am well aware of his character  ;D
He seems to have suffered a head injury in Turkey in WW1 and gone off the rails in the 20s and 30s.
