Finding William PRIDE of Ayr, Scotland
« on: Wednesday 02 October 19 22:24 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I've hit a wall with my family tree, or rather, I've hit an ocean lol!  I can't seem to trace him past Montreal.  Here's what I do know for sure:

William Pride born 1829 in Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland, had a son (William Alexander Pride) in 1848, married Catherine McDougall in 1854, had two daughters (Jeanie and Jessie), in 1855 and 1859, died September 4th, 1910 and was buried at Mont Royal Cemetery in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  This information was gathered through the cemetery and confirmed through records on ancestry.ca.

Here's where the fun begins:
In Canada, as I'm sure has been posted before, finding passenger lists is nearly impossible for people arriving prior to 1865.  According to a 1901 census, William moved to Canada in 1854.  According to the cemetery, William Alexander was born in Montreal in 1848, and according to some possible links to other family trees, William Alexander may have been born in Quebec City.  Ah, the classic family mystery!

I'm asking for two things really.  A little guidance on where to look next would be great, but if anyone has some of these names on their family tree and can fill in the blanks, it will be well reciprocated!

There is a Marion Pride of Cross Street Wallacetown listed in the 1821 census as head of household but the Lists of Inscriptions for St Quivox, Wallacetown and Newton Green cemeteries don't have any entries for Pride.

"William Pride born 1829 in Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland, had a son (William Alexander Pride) in 1848"

Who was the mother of William Alexander?

What info. do you have about him (& the others) on census records to work out when/where born?

Have you found them on any census prior to 1901?

Hi and welcome to Rootschat,

There is a birth of a William Ballantine Pride at St. Quivox and Newton, Ayr on 25th Nov 1826 to a William Pride and a Mary Goudie.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTKN-M5X

I noticed the name Ballantyne on the headstone and wondered if this could be relevant.

Looby :)

I note that there are umpteen trees on Ancestry stating that William's first wife was a Mary Niel and that they married 10/11/1844 Tranent, East Lothian.   This was another William Pride who was actually born Inveresk, Midlothian, his wife's surname actually McNiel, and they remained in Tranent.

I too go with your William being William Ballantine Pride born 25/11/1826.

In my opinion William went to Canada as a single man and married his first wife there - in 1861 census there are 4 children all shown as born in Canada.
