Finding father from dna test
« on: Thursday 03 October 19 21:42 BST (UK) »
Good evening, a general query, my 2 sisters and I share a birth mother, would a dna test of all three of us show if we have the same father? Thanks in advance for any help, may put me on the right track to discover my real father, PS any recommendations for reliable test kits or companies?

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Yes, the shared DNA percentages would indicate whether you have a full sibling or half-sibling relationship with each sister.  Full siblings who are not identical twins can be expected to share c50% (50.5% for me and my sister). Half-siblings can be expected to share c25%.

I have tested with both 23andMe and Ancestry. I have found each has benefits for different purposes. 23andMe provides excellent detail in its DNA results, showing you not just how much DNA you share with each person but which bits of which chromosomes.  It also has an option to get health-based results which have been interesting in my family.

Ancestry’s strengths include the huge size of their database and the sophisticated integration of DNA results with family trees.

Enjoy the adventure! Make sure you don’t pay full price for kits - both those I tested with are on sale at the moment.
