2-4-1767 George mother Isobel Polgavie
1-12-1769 John mother Isobel Balgaire
10-12-1771 Charles mother Isobel Begrie
12-6-1777 Agnes mother Isabel Balgivie

Is it possible the indexed surnames differ to what's on the actual registers, e.g. an 'ir' could look like a 'v' or the other way round ''v' looking like 'ir'?

Can you tell us how the surname looks for each on the images you have compared with the index?

The name John Petrie sounds familiar; I'm pretty sure there's a distant cousin or uncle named John Petrie Gordon in the family.

It looks well worth following up on those witnesses. Even if you have to do “mini trees” for them in case they are related, which looks likely.  ;)

Added: Annie, I was curious about the Balgairie variant, possibly with the ‘ir’ being a v.

They all seem to look like how they're written on the register. The name on Charles's seems a little squished or worn out, but I would say it looks like Begrie

Can you give us an idea when the name changed from capital B to P in your research & when the name began changing from your more recent docs?

So it looks like it changed from P to B over time. In 1767, it's Polgavie. In '69, it's Balgaire. In '71 it's Begrie, and in '77, it's Balgivie. I was wondering if it was getting shorter over time, but it went from Begrie to Balgivie.

There's an Isobel Pergavie born 1744 in Blairgowrie, but that's the closest thing I've seen aside from the one born 1740 near Aberdeen.

Are all the baptisms e.g. in the same area with same Minister as I'm trying to work out why such differences & of course witnesses, are any named Polgavie in any variant or are any witnesses women with a different surname who may be a married relative of the mother?

They're all in Arbroath, but no minister is mentioned. There are also no women witness.
