What records should exist for someone born abroad to British parents?
« on: Tuesday 08 October 19 12:52 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the birth details for June Elizabeth Anne Bourne B 1928/1929.

I've got her arriving on a ship from Singapore on 8 Oct 1930 aged 2 with her parents John Leslie Bourne and Peggy Bourne Nee Seaton. I believe her father was a planter in what was then called the Federated Malay States.

I have a departure to Singapore of John and Peggy on 18 Nov 1926 so I'm guessing their daughter was born abroad so I was wondering where, if anywhere, her birth might be recorded?

The birth of a British subject overseas should appear in the GRO Consular indices, which you can search free (you need to register) at:

https://familyrelatives.com/articles/details.php?aid=46

If you find the record you are seeking in the index, you should be able to use the reference details to buy a copy from the General Record Office

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/menu.asp

If you haven't used this site before, you will need to register here as well.

Thanks Galium, that's a really useful resource but unfortunately I can't seem to find and mention of June Elizabeth Ann Bourne.

The national archives have a 'help' page on this subject

ADDED
I have looked on the overseas index on FindMyPast and can't see her there either

Rosie,

Thanks for that too. I guess the other option is that she was adopted but I don't know how you go about finding that out either...

Legal adoptions did not start until the late 1920's so there would probably be no record of an adoption if that had taken place.  Sorry I was thinking she was born late 1910's.

Passenger list has her as Anne Bourne age 2 (1931)

J L Bourne was a planter in the Port Dickson area of Malaya (at the Sua Betong Estate per The Federated Malay States Gazette of 24 December 1925).

The FMS was then a British colony and the birth would have been registered with the local administration. Hence it would  not appear in consular births.

I found 11 mentions of JL Bourne in the online newspaper database of the Singapore National Library Board but no birth announcements: http://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/Digitised/Search?ST=1&AT=search&k=%22j%20l%20bourne%22

Shaun, thanks for that. Looks like they had a nice life in the FMS. Where did you find the Federated Malay States Gazette article?

Rosie, If she was adopted it would have been in the late 1920s. In later records she seem to use her full name.

Only if her birth was registered with the British Embassy/Consulate will it appear in overseas British births. My children were all in primary school when their births were registered at Consulate even though they were registered local shortly after birth.
