Gower shipwreck
« on: Tuesday 15 October 19 22:27 BST (UK) »
Hi

There is a family story that one of my ancestors was a Spanish sailor who married a girl from Gower when his ship capsized off the Gower coast. But that's all we know.

We don't know the name of the ship, his name or the year. Does anyone know what ship this may have been please?

Here's hoping.

An awful lot of ships lost off the Glamorgan coast over the centuries !
Can you give us an approximate period, and perhaps some names, which might help to tie into the Gower families ?

PS : You should ask the moderators to transfer your query to the Glamorgan board where it is more likely to come to the attention of people who can help.

Long shot.

In February 1802 the Spanish ship Nuestra Senora del Carmen, fron Bilbao for Bristol, was lost
with all hands on the Scarweather Sands.

That's great. Thanks so much for your help. We think it was sometime in the 19th century and the lady he married was called Grove, possibly from Parkmill or Penmaen. Though there were quite a few Groves living in Gower at the time.
