I can't see Edwin in either Welford Rd or Gilroes -- I looked for Read, Reed and Reid. There's one Edwin Reid in Gilroes but he was apparently 70 when he died in 1944, so quite a bit too young to pass as yours, I think.

I see that in 1871, Edwin was a "coal merchant's clerk" and in 1881, he was a "coal agent".

This may be a red herring, but in Jan 1889, one Edwin Reid arrived in Boston, Massachusetts, having sailed from Liverpool. He was 35 years old, a bookkeeper, and looks as though he was travelling alone. Could this have been him?

Hello Annie,

The age 'fits' as does the occupation as I have seen him described as a Clerk.

Do you have any more information on this Edwin please?

I don't, I'm afraid! I can't see him in the American censuses. Frustrating!

Well Annie I think you did exceptionally well spotting an Edwin leaving the country.  There has to be some explanation as to his whereabouts especially as Annie notes she is married rather than widowed.

I am going to tag her as someone for whom I will purchase a death certificate in the hope this adds some information to Edwin's destiny.

Did you locate his travelling record in Anc???

Many thanks.
