19th century printers in Barton St Mary
« on: Thursday 17 October 19 18:12 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know the name of a printing company operating in or near Barton St Mary Gloucester in the 1880s?

I have read that Barton St Mary was a hamlet then.  But at Vauxhall Road in 1881, William F EVANS (head) and William Henry MABLY (lodger), who were 2 (printing) compositors, were living in the same household.

William Henry MABLY had moved from Wadebridge in Cornwall.  I guess that he had taken up lodgings with a colleague.

Many thanks

Hi
This 1884-86 oldmap shows Vauxhall Rd to be quite close to the  city, well within walking distance even now much less then when people walk everywhere.
I would think compositors might well have worked for a News Paper.

Page 511 lists printers in Gloucestershire.  There doesn't appear to be a page listing printers  Gloucester itself. Page 511 can be downloaded and then opened as a PDF for easier scrutiny
and page 188 lists newspapers in Gloucester.

Thank you for your reply which puts a different perspective on things.

I no longer assume they were working for a little printing company that might still hold very old employment records!! ::)  If they could easily walk into the centre of Gloucester then there were so many opportunities for employment - though a long way to come from Wadebridge, Cornwall.  I have not found any family links in Gloucester.

Presumably William Henry MABLY had completed a 7 year apprenticeship the previous year (aged 21).  The following year (1882) he had moved to Reading, Berks, and married there - someone originally from Wadebridge.

Some things we will never know!

Many thanks again

Hi
Wadebridge  -  Gloucester  --  Reading.

I wonder if the GWR had their own printing facilities.
