todays challenge John Oakes 1675 - 1722 St Chads ,Over
« on: Friday 18 October 19 08:25 BST (UK) »
Good Morning
I have all morning on the laptop and I am determined ( with a lot of help from members I hope ) to find my OAKES family in the Civil War - 1642 - 1651 .
John Oakes was born 1675 and died 13th November 1722 and is registered in St Chads , Over ,Cheshire .
his son Ralph Oakes married Mary Holland .
John Oakes is my DIRECT 7 x Great Grandfather - I don't have Johns wife - Ralphs mother - and I don't have Johns parents .
any help with this will be HUGELY appreciated - I would love to solve this before 12 noon - as I have to go out then - I have 11 Grandchildren and my 10yr old Grandaughter is doing the English Civil War topic at present - would like to tell her an Oakes member during that period and where they were
thanks for reading - appreciated  :)

I have found a burial in August 1700 in St Chads of Ellin Oakes - spouse John Oakes - Ralph Oakes was born 1700 - I wonder if this is his mum ?? died in childbirth ??   if it is the wife of my John Oakes he would only be 24/25 at the time ...?

There is a marriage at St Chads, Over - 6 April 1702

John Oakes and Hannah Smith, botp.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I think that might be a possible because I have Ralph Oakes baptism as 14th June 1702 on Familysearch - not 1700 as I had previously posted ...so if it is my Johns wife she would have been 6 months pregnant at the marriage - definitely one to note - Thanks BumbleB

1685 marriage can be ruled out as John was born 1675

Image for 1702 baptism for Ralph says that John is husband(man) of Swanlow, and that ties in with the 1722 burial of John, husbandman of Swanlow.

That's great BumbleB - So if it were your family would that convince you that Hannah was Ralphs mum / Johns wife ??
so I presume that Swanlow didn't have a church and they used St Chad ??
records for Oakes family seem to stop before 1680 in Over - which makes me think there were no Oakes in Over during the Civil War - so where were they from - ??
added
none in Middlewich either -
my Oakes family are
1675 - 1750 in Over
1730 - 1780 in Middlewich
1780 - 1820 Backford
1820 1870 - Backford /Little Neston / Neston    all Cheshire

It's a big plus, isn't it?  I'd be very much inclined to think they are the same family.

Swanlow is part of Over parish.

I was going to ask you where you found John Oakes' birth year of 1675.  I can't seem to see one in the Cheshire registers available on FindMyPast.
