Hi. A snippet from a newspaper....1888.

On 4 October at St Sepulchre London by Rev Thomas Pugh. Linford George Balch of  Caterham to
Helen Elizabeth daughter of the late Congrove Banwell ( as spelt on transcript I cannot view page) o Buckingham.

The Congreve that dies in 1871 looks likely. Now if birth year is out and that's possible what if her mother is Camilla and she died in or soon after childbirth. Father left with new baby....confusion...the birth might not have been registered. It's also possible that there was a Helen already.....baby named Ellen.

The image for this marriage is online and the occupation of Congreve is given as Farmer which fits with the older Congreve, as the one in Oxford b 1837 was an upholsterer.

Thanks I'm lost without my Ancestry sub :'(

So we are looking at Congreve born @ 1811 the farmer as being her father. She could be illegitimate and born after the death of Camilla so under a different birth name.

The marriage of Arthur Henry in 1892 is the son of Congreve born 1837

and this accounts for Helen b 1848 ( I had considered she might have lopped 10 years off her age :-) but don't think this can be the case

The Camilla BANWELL on your post it notes, b Stowe Bucks c 1844  is actually Camilla BENNETT the niece of Ann ROPER who is Congreve BANWELL’ s sister in law .  (All at Foxcott 1862). With others I will post later, including a Helen BANWELL recorded as niece which I take as being Ann ROPER’s niece and. Ongreve’s daughter. The one who dies in 1865.

I think Camilla’s parents are James BENNETT and Hannah ROPER. They have children with Langton as one of their names so I am assuming the connection is via Congreve’s wife Camilla Née LANGTON

Added, Camilla being also born Stowe, Bucks.

I wonder if Ann ROPER’s will would be useful. I don’t think she has children. The executors are a niece and nephew (Bennett) she may have named all her nieces and nephews,

Only £1.50 at present, although a long wait.

Ok, I am fairly confident that Ann Roper is née Langton, Camilla’s older sister.
Stowe Bucks baptism b Sept 1 1811
Parents William Langton and Ann.

And another sister, Hannah, bapt 1821 is who married  James Bennett, and Camilla Bennett b 1844  etc are her children

Although a tree on ancestry with photographs says she is Hannah ROPER   what do others think?  GRO is down at present so can’t check MMN

Added but marriage at Stowe of Hannah Langton and James Bennett  21 Oct 1840 (Bucks Marriage  indexes)

Still no closer to identifying  Helen Elizabeth’s birth
