The elusive Emma PETERKIN & Florrie PRECIOUS !
« on: Friday 25 October 19 07:54 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the parents of Emma PETERKIN, b.1844 Mitcham, (d.1915 St Pancras), and Florrie PRECIOUS, b.12 Sep 1886 Edmonton, (d.Oct 1978 Enfield). I cannot find them on Census returns before they had children, and as neither of them seem to have 'married' their partners, it's not possible to get fathers' names from certificates.  Emma's Partner was Louis WENGER (who later emigrated to the US and married there), and her children were christened WENGER/PETERKIN. As for  Florrie's partner, he was Emma's son, Henri Ferdinand WENGER/PETERKIN b.1880 in Holborn.  Help please !!  ??? ??? ???

The problem with Emma PETERKIN is, I can't find her birth anywhere, and the first time she seems to appear is on the 1871 Census as a Visitor at the home of Alexander Ladler Simmons, 10 West St. Warwick. Then, on the 1881 Census she's with children, and the surname WENGER, at 108 Victoria Rd. Romford, on the 1891 Census with Louis & Henri, and the surname PETERKIN, at 46 Eagle St. Holburn, on the 1901 Census (a widow) with daughter Emma Louise at 314 Myddleton Sq. Clerkenwell, and finally on the 1911 Census she's with Emma Louise and Henri, and the surname WENGER PETERKIN, at 4 Frederick Place, Gray's Inn Rd. London.  Also, on her children's Birth Certificates, she gives her maiden name as PETERKIN.  So as you can see, I'm slowly going 'round the bend' with this one.  :o :o :o :o :o :o

You were given a probable birth on the other thread:

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=820192.0

You would need to get the birth cert to find her mother's name.

Sorry, you are talking about the mother Emma.

Ok.....

Been playing with the surname Peterkin.  Lots of dead ends so far but what about this name PETTICAN...... sounds very close if said quickly......however the is a birth but not in Mitcham or even close....Emma Pettican Lexden reg district 1844 mmn Peartree.

A marriage in 1842 for Charles Pettican to Mary Ann Paretree.

There is another Emma Pettican marries in 1873 but her birth ties in to the 1847 birth.

I think its worth playing around with the name.

The 1871 census does not have a marital status for Emma.  Could she have been a married woman?  Do you have any of the children's birth certs to see exactly how she is named?  The indexing suggests to me that she is simply named as Emma PETERKIN with no 'formerly' anything.

A woman named Emma GINGER married to Thomas Alexander PETERKIN in 1865 in Clerkenwell.  The newspaper announcement of the marriage says she is the daughter of the late Thomas GINGER of Leighton Buzzard.

Having a look at the 1851 census, her place of birth is Mitcham, Surrey, and she is aged 7.

Class: HO107; Piece: 1756; Folio: 197; Page: 17

GINGER, EMMA  (WILLIAMSON)
GRO Reference: 1844  M Quarter in CROYDON  Volume 04  Page 97

There are a number of news articles which mention Emma PETERKIN.  The relationship broke down in 1866, her husband Thomas with many aliases was charged with bigamy in 1869 when he married someone else, and Emma was a female prison warder for a time.
