I somehow can't imagine a woman giving her 'Maiden' name on her childrens Birth Certificates as that of her Ex Husband, but who knows ?

Then she hasn’t given her maiden name (usually in the form “formerly xxx”). She has given only one version of her name, which is her current name, derived from her lawful husband.

Having a look at the 1851 census, her place of birth is Mitcham, Surrey, and she is aged 7.

Class: HO107; Piece: 1756; Folio: 197; Page: 17

Debra  :)

In the 1851 census found by Debra, Emma Ginger and her family are living at the BELL INN, Leighton Buzzard.  Emma's father, Thomas Ginger, is the innkeeper.

A newspaper article (Bucks Herald 14 November 1868) regarding the bigamy case between Thomas Alexander Peterkin and Emma Peterkin notes Emma Peterkin of the BELL INN, Leighton Buzzard.

I tried to post the snip but this board doesn't allow attachments.

Yes I can see your point avm, but why would she then go on to give her children an Ex Husband's name when she's with Louis WENGER?  - Emma Louise PETERKIN, Louis WENGER/PETERKIN, Henri Ferdinand WENGER/PETERKIN and Alice Maud WENGER/PETERKIN.  ??? ??? ???

Well after Jool’s find about the Bell Inn, I don’t think there’s any room for doubt that she’s the same person. She was using the surname Peterkin, as was her right. Are you saying her children also used it in preference to Wenger? I am not sure what you mean by “Wenger/Peterkin” - were they used together or in the alternative?
