There is/was a Nether Craig in Forfar Parish.

According to this site which has some information from testaments; https://www.ancestor.abel.co.uk/Angus/Forfar.html

Restenneth is an old name for the Parish of Forfar. I'm not sure when the name was changed but Restenneth is a Priory ~2 miles east of Forfar and it served as the place of worship for the town.

Thanks Liviani. It seems that Restennet is the old name for the north of the parish of Forfar, and that Restennet and Forfar parish were combined at some point.

A possibility is that Auchterforfar was once known as Nether Craig? Not having much luck with old maps.

No, Auchterforfar is a farm about 1.5 miles to the East South East of Forfar. It can be found on Scotland's Places and a few old maps. James Henderson may have moved from Nether Craig to Auchterforfar.

Restenneth is an old name for the Parish of Forfar.
Restenet/Restenneth is only a part of the parish of Forfar. The fact that the 1598 document refers to Nether-Craig, par. of Restennet, sher. of Forfar demonstrates that the name Forfar was not, even at that time, synonymous with Restenneth, though the combined parish was sometimes referred to as Forfar-Restenet.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for the info Forfarian.

Still not had much luck in finding Nether Craig on old maps such as Thomson, Moll etc. I suppose it was perhaps not significant enough to mark down. It was probably long gone by the time OS maps came around. It was most certainly in the vicinity of Forfar though.

Just found an amazing baptism record!  :o

It has two Ormond families and James Henderson of Auchterforfar, father of Katharine Henderson baptizing another daughter, and also lists his wife. Can't attach here due to file size restrictions, but here is a transcript:

1765

"James Henderson weaver in Auchterforfar and Katharine Donald his wife had their daughter's name registered called Jean..."

"David Ormond weaver in Kutruchie (?) and Jean Neish had their child's name registered called William..."

"Thomas Ormond, smith in Craignathro (?) and Jean Crab had their child's name registered called Isabel..."

Strange to find all this info all on one page. Just goes to show it really is worth reading the entire page as it contains info about your ancestors' neighbours, friends, associates and family.

"Kutruchie" is almost certainly "Pitreuchie". It's close to Auchterforfar.

I am getting confused now as I have just looked for marriages of James Henderson and Katharine Donald as I now know James Henderson of Auchterforfar's wife's name, and there is one in Forfar in 1757!

This would mean Katharine Henderson would have been at most 10 in 1767 when she married John Ormond. What is going on?

Is the James Ormond of Auchterforfar in the above record possibly the son of the James Ormond I am looking for?
