help tracing a boxer and travel records
« on: Monday 28 October 19 17:59 GMT (UK) »
I've recently discovered that my gt gt grandad Joseph thatcher, from lambourn, was a shin kicker, wrestler and boxer. In this attached article, it says he and his brother henry traversed the usa with his job, and that he boxed at home and abroad. I don't know where to start looking for info about any of this. Would it be documented if he was boxing abroad?
I've tried looking at passenger lists on FindMyPast, but they start from 1891 i think. He would've travelled about c1859.

Can anyone give me any hints or tips on whether i can expand further on all this info?
many thanks

Henry Thatcher, age 21,

The occupation for both looks like Miner on the original image but not sure  :-\
Arrival Date:19 Jul 1858

Original image available on Ancestry, New York Passenger and Crew Lists.
Robbins - Wolverhampton.
Spooner - Monmouthshire & Wolverhampton.

Hmm, I wonder if the "miner" is a mis translation??
Also, if it was them, why would they travel from liverpool??
I know in 1861, Joseph was a lodger in cirencester, but i'd assume if they were going to travel to america, they would've gone from southampton.

Jool - thankyou. It does look like miner. But Joseph was a "fitter" in 1861 and in 1851 he was a "gun and machine Maker".

Henry has various occupations, white smith, gun smith, I wonder if it might not be them

Maybe not them then, it was the only one I could see close to the 1859 date you mentioned.
