Question
Who did John Jay marry 1816 The Hythe Kent and was he a widow?

I found a John Jay marrying Mary Flood 1812, I' hoping the wife in 1816 is an Elizabeth/Eliza

Many thanks in advance

It is an Elizabeth Fermor/Fenn something like that.  Both of this parish. No indication  of marital status
Can’t attach a clip of her surname to this thread sorry

I favour FENN

According to the 1812 marriage record (to widow Mary Flood), he was John Jay of the Royal Staff Corps. There is an army record for such a John Jay, born circa 1781 in Coggeshall, Essex, served 1811 to 1826. A gardener by trade.

Thanks everyone.

Just need to find out when Mary of 1812 died as the facts are lining up nicely.

The John Jay  the soldier of Coggeshall Essex  is the man I am tracing by 1841 he is married to an Elizabeth and living in Coggeshall.

I did find a baptism  27 November 1819 at the Wesleyan Church The Hythe Kent of Sarah daughter of John Jay and Elizabeth and he is described as being a soldier.
Then an Ellenor (as in register)on 23 March 1817 father Staffs Corps, Eleanor married John Raven at Coggeshall 1836 and were witness' to Ruth Sarah Jay' marriage to George Thurgar in 1840.
I believe Ruth Sarah Jay baptized as Sarah 1819 are the same person.

emeltom/Mckha489 - was there another witness please I don't have a sub the FindMyPast only anc. and is there a date of the marriage

The army record is on FindMyPast and also ( I think) on Fold3.  It's just a couple of pages - you don't get much info in army discharge records from that era.

Here's the National Archives catalogue entry for him: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8840317

The other witness was Richard Chamberlain, but as he witnessed a lot of the marriages, he was probably the parish clerk or similar. Date was 13th May 1816.
