Annie

In response to your questions, much of my own research is based on my great great grandfather, Donald McLeod’s Obituary. It says he was born in Benbecula, South Uist, on August 18, 1836. It says “with his parents, three sisters and one brother he immigrated to Canada in 1849”. It says 2 sisters  “survive” him. This obit is from a newspaper and says the town of “Moray” above it. He died April 7, 1916 and is buried in Parkhill, ON.

His children were:
With Mary McKenzie:
Sarah Anne
Colin Donald

With Mary Rubena Robertson:
John
Christina
Alexander
Mary Isabella
Florence (Flora)
Norman Neil
Helen Jane
Catherine Irene
David Edwin

Honestly, the research a family member had complied with the Helen and Mary as siblings had no solid backing and never had any hits in my research so I decided to start with a blank slate and see where it led me. It’s one reason I left it out initially. I wanted to go with what I knew for sure.

In my research Alexander was his brother’s name mostly because of the 1861 census where Alexander (head) 28, Donald 23 and the widowed Sarah 52 in West Williams ON. Interestingly, the 1851 census from West Zorra, near Ingersol which was brought to my attention and possibly matches the 1841 census for the McLeods in Dunganachy, also has “Alex” listed in that family with Donald and the widowed Sarah.

I just found a death record in Parkhill ON for a Catherine McLeod whose parents were John McLeod and Sarah MacIsaac which I’m going to explore to see if she is possibly sister “Ketty”. She was b. abt 1832 Scotland and married James Shears. d. 8 Apr 1918. The name MacIsaac sticks in my mind from past research as a possible last name for Sarah. Worth a try (: If I can figure out his sisters names this should help me a lot.

I appreciate ALL your comments and research. Wow. I’m really glad I turned here as having so much input is so helpful when you’ve hit a bit of a wall! Colin you’ve also given me somewhere to look. And DonM if you have that link for John McLeods death record I would love to have it (:

The 1874 marriage record of a James Shears and a Catherine (assuming I have found the correct couple) is rather unhelpful. Catherine is Catherine McDonald and a Widow. Her parents are unfortunately given as John and Sarah McDonald. Witnesses L I Osborne and C McLean, both of Parkhill. Marriage took place in Parkhill.

Hopefully, her first marriage will turn up. It's good that you have parents from her death record to work with.

Sorry I'm away I have other links and info I will send upon my return.

John's Death https://oxford.ogs.on.ca/pdf/Some_Early_Settlers_in_Oxford_County.pdf

There are two Sarah's living together in the census I think it was in Nissouri one was 90 the other 80.  I think it was the 1881.

There was also a family living in Huron South (north of McGillivray) that included John/Sarah/Donald and others.

There are two Donald's in Parkhill 1880 one at just north in McGillivray the other just south in Williams West.

Select Middlesex then at the bottom of the page Select People go to page 446.

Further to my comments about the marriage of Catherine to James Shears....

Although I can't find a birth registration, Catherine seems to have had a daughter Mary after her marriage to James, and who can be found with her in the 1881 and 1891 censuses.

It looks like this Mary married a William Murdock in Port Huron Michigan USA in 1896. Unfortunately, her parents are not given.

BUT....

Mary Murdock passed away 20 Mar 1905 in Michigan. Birthdate 07 Feb 1876 Canada. Parents James SHEARS b. England and Catherine MCLEOD b. Scotland.

Images of the records for Mary are available on Anc...y if you have the requisite sub. They should also be available at familysearch for free, although I haven't checked.

Anyway, food for thought.

Assuming for the moment Catherine who married James Shears is correct, I'd be inclined to go by the info. given by herself on her marriage, of her mother being Sarah McDonald as the info. on her death would have been from a 3rd party.

What is the surname of Sarah on Donalds' marriages?

But......

It is noted on the marriage record to James Shears that Catherine is a widow?

It is always possible that when asked her parents names she said John and Sarah and the writer simply put McDonald, or didn't hear McLeod properly. This record is also a transcript which could have been written wrong.

It is unfortunate that records from the time Catherine (McLeod?) would have married for the first time are few and far between. There are 4 McDonald's with the Shears family in the 1881 census but, unfortunately, relationships are not given.

"parents are unfortunately given as John and Sarah McDonald"

I had read the above to mean John (McLeod) & Sarah MacDonald.

Makes things a bit more complicated.

PB...following from your comments, I have been looking for info on the McDonald children who show in the Shears household in 1881 with James and Catherine. I thought they were maybe children from her first marriage. I think they could well be.

Sarah McDonald born around 1860-1.

She married first to an Edward Johnson on 7 March 1888 in Middlesex, Ontario. Her parents then showed as Donald and Catherine McDonald (image for marriage).

Johnson family in Michigan for the 1900 census www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9BN-VHB

She remarried (showing as widow) in 1912:

Birth Place: Pasphill, Ontario
Marriage Date:    20 Feb 1912
Marriage Place: Essex, Ontario, Canada
Parents Donald McDonald and Catherine McLeod
Spouse: Edward Hodgson

Burial www.findagrave.com/memorial/54631355

Death details:

Widowed and aged 73

That is where I am up to...
