Just for information

The William Salt Library in Stafford has many Staffordshire records.  There is also on YouTube, a 38 minute virtual tour, produced during the lockdown.  It is a fascinating tour and explains all the records they hold, apart from William Salt's collection.

William Salt (1808 to 1863) was a London banker from a Staffordshire family and the collection was given by his widow to the County of Stafford.

I’ve visited this library.

There are so many hit's on British Newspapers on line - assume this is the next generation.  Does it gives family connection  ???  (Cleveland)

Thursday 4 October 1827

Leeds Intelligence

'At a Quarterly General Court of Proprietors, held on Friday, at the East India House, a grant of £20,000 was voted to the family of the Marquess of Hastings, in acknowledgement of the services rendered to the Company, by the late Marquess, in India; and also a pension of £1,000 per annum to Sir Archibald Campbell.

A Noble Marquess (Stafford) has, it is said, suffered a double mortification; first his own title is sucessfully claimed by another; and then that which he was anxious to obtained, (Cleveland) falls to the lot of a third.

To shew his sense of latter indignity, the town mansion is to alter its name to Bridgwater House.
What a pity it is that great people do not consider how very little such things make them appear!

----

On Wikipedia, Viscount Barnard, was the son of Henry VANE, 2nd Earl of Darlington.   In 1827 he was created Marquess of Cleveland.

This is a completely different person.  There are about 300 Archibald Campbells, and it is very hard to disambiguate them, but it is easy to say that this is the wrong Archibald because he had been dead 22 years by 1827 and I highly doubt anyone would be providing him with a pension!  He also was not a Sir.  .
