Jonw65 Thank you for that newspaper report. I hadn’t seen it -very sad but gives more detail to William’s family.  I’m only now starting to research the Combers in more detail and it seems there is a lot of them!  Thanks again :)

Good evening,

I know this is an old post from 2019 but just came across it whilst browsing. The White Swan was in Brighton rd, Pease Pottage. About half a mile from the Black Swan. It's name was changed to The Grapes at some time.

Also found this piece;

(Linda, you may already know this but William Comber (1812-1871) married Mary Longley (1825-1900) in May 1847 and by 1861 they were running the White Swan, the former name of the Grapes.
They raised their six children there: William, Walter, Fanny, Emma, Philadelphia and Mary.
To supplement the family income William was also described variously as a gardener and agricultural labourer.
William died in 1871, and Mary continued to run the pub until she died in 1900. .
I am sorry but I have no photographs of the Comber family to send you.)

Thanks for the pictures.  Shame The White Swan had to be demolished.
