I think I have seen Skelton written somewhere - here is a Richard Vairy in 1841 in that area
He is 20 yrs and there is William 15yrs too.

I think there are two different Skeltons  :-\ so perhaps not this one.

Thanks to all for the many & varied replies.

I posted in Westmorland because, simply, I had to start somewhere.

Despite ranging far & wide, I have yet to find any information regarding Richard Varey's father's occupation but I could hazard a guess, "Earthenware Dealer" as were many associated families.

The marriage taking place in 1845, Oldham, took me to OPC info, but it only confirmed "Banns" and no more.

All 4 children that are with Widow Ellen Varey in 1861 have a mishmash of "Varey" surnames but mmn is Miller according to GRO records but census returns do not always have birth dates in accord. They all appear to have survived, with Grace & William married.

David Varey (nephew) having mmn Derbyshire may be a clue since a Mary Ann Derbyshire married a James Varey in 1843 and had a son David born 1857, St Helens. That appears to lead to a William Varey, 1789 (Skerton) - 1861 (Preston), who may have had a wife, Grace, about whom I have yet to find any info.

It would be too easy just to pass the difficulty of establishing connections and accept that Richard's parents are William & Grace...my preference being for some supporting evidence.

LancashireBMD has the marriage as taking place at St Mary's Oldham.  Ancestry has the images for this parish up to the first week of October 1845, banns are called for that marriage after that date.

Maybe your only supporting evidence for his father would be to purchase the marriage certificate of Richard

Census returns never show birth dates ;D
They show ages of the people - that is, ages they admitted to!

Except, of course, for the 1841 census where the instructions were to round down to a multiple of 5 years for all adults (i.e. those aged over 15).

Thank you Rosie, for the suggestion to purchase death records, for both Richard & William the putative father. Shame they're unlikely to give much detail about wife/wives. Of course I'd have to be more precise about dates/ages or I might well purchase quite the wrong records. It's good to know there are folk reading my somewhat vague & imprecise postings. Must do better.
