http://bedfordregiment.org.uk/otherbn/otherbtn.html has some info on 1st Garrison Battalion.  Such battalions were sent to India to release other fighting battalions for, principally, the Western Front or the Egypt/Palestine campaign.  Given that 1st Garrison Battalion was not formed until December 1915, and he had served in UK from March 1915, I suspect he was not fully fit.

The MoD no longer replace WW1 medals (source - October 2018 - https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/749392/MODMO_0001.pdf)

You could consider a replica that can be engraved (the net will find medal firms who do this) or another suggestion is to look out for his medal appearing on EBay.  A suggestion that some have made is to buy a genuine medal, the engraving wouldn't be visible if framed.

You can get a copy of his death certificate from the GRO.  His reference is:
GRO Armed Forces Overseas deaths and burials 1914-1921 India 1916 Volume I 65 Page 385 line 108

The 1947 Percy Reginald Ruddock, son of Oliver Thomas and Jessie that Sandra gives links to was originally buried in the Hagen Military Cemetery in Germany about 50 miles south of where he now lies.  (A number of individuals who were originally buried in smaller or isolated cemeteries were at a later date, exhumed and reburied in war cemeteries. The concentration of cemeteries allowed otherwise unmaintainable graves to be moved into established war grave cemeteries where the Commission could ensure proper commemoration). He was serving with 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders stationed in Essen.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
