This has spurred me on to purchase more credits to try find more documentation and unravel.

Did you purchase the 1860 marriage certificate, and if so what were the details, in particular who did Mary Hogg name as her father and who were the witnesses, please?

Oh, perhaps Jean has now left this thread .. as no answer yet to your question, Jen.

Oh well, with collaboration we have found out some good stuff for her before she left.  I do like this team work approach on RootsChat. :)

I have not left, just struggling to ‘post’ my posts!

I did purchase marriage certificate. There are no parents listed for either - possible because they were of ‘age’.

Witnesses were George? And Jane Weatherald - here is this name again (see below).

The accepted implication of 'no parent named' is that they were illegitimate and didn't know the name of the father.

However the names George and Jane Weatherald as witnesses is significant, as Mary Hogg/Weatherald had younger step-siblings named George and Jane (see reply #24, 1851 census).

I am quite convinced that Mary was the daughter of Elizabeth Hogg who later married James Weatherald, and that this is what led to the differing names on the registration of her children. To me the clincher is that Mary was enumerated with James and Elizabeth in the 1871 census.

Unfortunately the certificate you have posted is impossible to read when enlarged.

I agree - in the 1861 census George and Jane are listed as children of James and Elizabeth!

Thanks everyone - we did join the dots!

Now to figure some other relationships! Intrigue  :)

Just an update on Elizabeth and James Weatherald found by Jen ..

I have checked the Elswick burials but Elizabeth is not there so goodness knows where she might be.

I think this is likely to be James' burial at Preston Cemetery, North Shields:

Entry 2862
James Weatherald
Male
79 years
Beer House Keeper
Place of Death: Rudyerd Street
Burial: 21 February 1895
Ceremony by (J. Milner?) Curate of Holy Trinity
Consecrated Grave.  No 8837

Thank you - I have also not yet found her - she did pre-decease him as I found him as widow in census.
