The BROWN family of Barnsley/Doncaster areas
« on: Saturday 16 November 19 07:29 GMT (UK) »
Good Morning,
I have the following census information:

         CENSUS      1861
Higham Common, Gawber, Barugh, Barnsley, Yorkshire
Surname   Names   Rel.         Status   Age   Born   Occupation   Place Born
Brown   Matthew   Head         m   55   1806   Labourer   Doncaster, Yorkshire
Brown   Martha   Wife           m   53   1808              Whitley, Yorkshire
Brown   William   Son              25   1836              Sutton, Lancashire
Brown   Fanny   Daughter      12   1849              Dodworth, Yorkshire

I also have another daughter, Sarah, born 1835, in Norton, Yorkshire, which is near Whitley.
There is also a Sutton village near Whitley. The Lancashire reference looks odd to me.
Can someone who has access to the original scan of the census record check it for me, please.

Stefan

The image states Lincolnshire S....  has been transcribed by Ancestry as Scotton, and it does look like that name.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks to both of you for your prompt replies.
BumbleB, the Scotton entry unfortunately brings more uncertainty :(
avm228, I have the 1851 from Family Search, without any birthplaces given, so thanks for that. The mother's name given as Ruth and the age given for Sarah, 14, means that I'm not sure it is the same family.
         CENSUS      1851
Barnsley
Surname   Names   Rel.   Status   Age   Born   Occupation   Place Born
Brown   Matthew   Head   m   45   1806   Farm Labourer
Brown   Ruth   Wife   m   43   1808
Brown   William   Son      16   1835
Brown   Sarah   Daughter      14   1837
Brown   Elizabeth   Daughter      10   1841
Brown   Mary Ann   Daughter      8   1843
Brown   Jane M   Daughter      6   1845
Brown   Henry   Son      4   1847
Brown   Fanny   Daughter      1   1850
Sarah was 23 dob 1835 when she married in 1858 and gave her mother's name as Martha. Confused now.

Matthew Brown married Martha Outhwaite on 26 November 1832 at Owston Yorkshire

The GRO Index gives Mary Ann 1842, Priscilla 1843, Henry 1846 and Fanny 1848 all with the mother’s maiden name as Outhwaite or a variation. There birth registrations are all in Ecclesfield Reg District which covered Dodworth then.

For some probably unknown region Martha is given as Ruth in the 1851 census but it seems the census covers the same family. Fanny is with Martha in the 1861 census.

I think Matthew Brown was buried at St Matthew Gawber from Higham on 7 Feb 1871.

I also think Matthew was baptised on 28 July 1805 at Owston, father Matthew Brown and mother Mary Cocking. Owston is near to Doncaster and I could imagine that in Higham, Barugh, Dodworth or Gawber you’d just say Doncaster. The other way round you’d probably say Barnsley.

Higham, Barugh, Doworth and Gawber are all very close to each other and to Barnsley. I used to live near and was puzzled at first by where Bark was, it turned out to be Barugh!

Thanks very much for all that, Gibel. Really useful.
When I first moved into the area, I was asked how I thought 'Barugh' should be pronounced by my now Mother in Law.
I wonder if the spelling is a corruption of 'borough'.
