Buxton Births in 1880s -home or away?
« on: Sunday 17 November 19 17:00 GMT (UK) »
I have a newly married family living in Buxton in the 1880's. On their first child's birth certificate their address in Rock Terrace (1880), they are still there in 1881 ( Arthur & Catherine Beavan).

Other children follow and birth certificates show different addresses.

March  1882    Edith       Summerhill Hollinsclough Buxton
July     1883    Arthur    South View Cottages Burbage Buxton
June    1884    Myra      7 Duke Street Burbage

I've always assumed they rented the houses and moved about a lot but now I'm wondering if it is just that Catherine was going to different places to get help with the births.
Her husband is recorded as being a clerk at the East Midland railway (I have his railway employment records) so is always in work. I'd love opinions on whether this would be a likely or whether I'm juts letting my imagination run away!

Have you found connections between the names of other  tenants in the 3 addresses 1881, they might be relatives helping out at a time when the mother needed it

That's a good suggestion Louisa Maud, thanks.  I have now checked and none of the neighbours  have familiar family names.  I know also that both Arthur and Catherine were not originally from the area having only moved to Buxton following their marriage.

What struck me was the number of addresses  within a few years.

I suppose it is because the addresses are on birth certificates that I wondered if Catherine had just given birth in these houses as she hadn't got female relatives close by. If there was a sort of 'staying with the midwife' in operation.

I wouldn't have known the addresses if it hadn't been for the births as these are all in between census so I'm just mulling possible ideas for the number of house moves.

Perhaps as their family grew they needed larger accommodation

Another good idea,  but looking at Google Earth the houses are not progressively larger.

I had wondered if they had gone for different houses as they might be cheaper but had talked myself out of that idea as I don't think even with 3 or 4 little ones they wouldn't cost a  significant amount more to feed.

I did notice that  the addresses are all further from Buxton town centre which seemed odd as Arthur's work was in the Railway station.
