1871 schedule for Off Street is RG10 Piece 5553 If you want to browse the area then it starts at folio 75 page 1.

Following on from Louisa Mauds post
Marriage June qtr 1841
BOWER    Edward
CHAMBERLAIN    Eliza
Leicester    15   139

ADDED Edwards occupation in 1851 is a Wool Carder (Master)

Thank you, this is very helpful  :) I've already checked up on the Mary Ann Bower from Leicestershire, wondering if she might be the one that I was looking for, but I believe that she appears in the 1871 census in Margate (Kent) (8; 101; 992; 45; 18) and the 1881 census in Bradford (Lancashire) (25; 4015; 7; 8) and again in North Manchester in the 1901 census (45; 3764; 28; 47; 258). Therefore, I don't know if it's actually her or not.

Mary Ann BOWER, 1847 d qtr. MMN CHAMBERLAIN

Louisa Maud

This is wrong if her birthdate is 1846

You are right, that is the daughter of Edward & Eliza so we can discount that one.

I've had a look at Off Street and it seems to be a hub for Irish immigrants. It looks as though almost everyone there is Irish, so it's possible that Mary was part of the community.

Edward hasn't appeared on any census records - I haven't been able to find him. His occupation according to the marriage certificate (1868) is "cloth dresser", which means he probably worked in a textile mill. As such, I would expect him to have been living in Leeds, as it was a textile hub, but he hasn't appeared anywhere. The certificate doesn't specify if he was deceased at the time of the marriage.

My apologies - Edward's father on the 1841 marriage entry was ABEL, not Bale  :-[ :-[ :-[  Slip of the fingers.    :-X

That's alright, not an issue  ;D I did think it was a bit unusual as a name, but it might have been a maiden name converted into a first name - who knows?

Unfortunately, I don't think that this Edward Bower is the right one seeing as his Mary Ann appears in other census records which mine does appear in, so I think we can discount him.
