Thank you. That must be it. Was it in the Duke's census and if so who lived there?

Achafarich is not listed in the 1792 Duke of Argyll list of inhabitants. Looking at the 1777 map it appears to be under the same ownership as that of Taychroman.

Is it likely that there are any papers relating to tenants at Taychroman?

Not sure if this is of any help?

NAS Catalogue (note variants);

1844 - "Archibald McMillan, farmer at Taychroman v Archibald MacConachy, shoemaker and
           cottar at Taychroman"

1855 - "Duke of Argyll v Archibald MacMillan and Donald MacMillan, farmers, Taychroman, Duncan
MacMillan and Donald MacCorkindale, farmers, Beachmenach, Dugald Matheson and John
           MacSporran, cottars, Achapharich"

1856 - "Duncan McConachy, farm servant to David McMillan, farmer, Taychroman"

Is it possible to go further back with the Campbeltown McConnachy line?

Marriage

01/02/1813 MACCONACHIE ARCHIBALD - MERRAN MACLACHLAN
                  537/10 51 Gigha and Cara

Knowing the names of the children of Archibald & Marion might help although it looks as though they may have been in Gigha or Cara originally (well worth a visit)...

07/02/1812 MACCONACHY CATHARINE - ARCHIBALD MACCONACHY/MERRAN MACLACHLAN
537/10 48 Gigha and Cara (Prior to marriage)

19/04/1814  MACCONACHY MARY - ARCHIBALD MACCONACHY/MERRAN MACLACHLAN
                   537/10 52 Gigha and Cara

04/04/1820 MACCHONACHIE MERRAN - ARCHIBALD MACCHONACHIE/MERRAN MCLACHLIN
                  537/20 3 Gigha and Cara

17/09/1828 MCCONACHY SARAH - ARCHIBALD MCCONACHY/SARAH MCLACHLANE
519/20 72 Killean and Kilchenzie (Marion/Sarah are interchangeable)

12/03/1831 MCCONACHY ARCHIBALD - ARCHIBALD MCCONACHY/MORE MCLACHLAN
                  519/20 90 Killean and Kilchenzie

There are others which could fill the gaps but no mothers names showing

Here they are in the 1841 census at taychroman

Archd McConachy  shoemaker  50
Mone   50
Janet 20
Mary 15
Betty 15
John 12
Maysie 11
Archd 10
Grace 6
James McMillan 30 Ag. labourer
Pensie McMillan 2

The marriage to Marion McLachlan is the correct one.
Also, daughter flora a female servant in the home of Robert McInven farmer at Tayinloan.
Flora subsequently married Charles McLean an Irish labourer and fisherman who lived in Campbeltown.

Rereading, I see what you mean about Gigha. Can anyone help with unravelling this one? The registers of Killean parish may be incomplete?

Any clues from witnesses to marriages?

What info. is on the marriage of Archibald & Marion?

There's a lack of males in 1841, do any show later?

Sorry, not sure what you mean by 'unravelling', in what sense?

Not sure what you mean about the Killean registers in regard to the above?

I mentioned earlier, there are a few possible baptisms which could be yours (to fill the gaps) but no mothers names indexed.

You need to check through the index of children born to an Archibald, separate them into families, cross reference those on the census & hopefully be able to eliminate some/most of the ones not indexed with a mother's name to help with possibles left on the list being yours.

Possible baptism for Flora who was elsewhere on census night 1841 but you didn't give her age?

Thank you for all of this.

Not all of the children may have lived to old age, but if that is the case then I struggle to find records of their deaths.

Flora was 15 in 1841 census, but that could be a rounded age. Other children could have been living away from home when the census was taken. I have taken 1821 to be her baptism, though.

Even so, if Mary was 15 she would have been born in 1826. having said that, from experience, ages and dates never quite seem to add up.

The registers of Killean don't seem to give much information.

Archibald McConachy is a very common name in Kintyre at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Having said all of this, I wonder if Gigha might well be the right place to look, given that this is the only recorded marriage with anything like the right names.

Are there Macconachy's on Gigha in the  Duke's census, or was Gigha not part of his estate?
