Trying to locate "Brixton Terrace", Exmouth
« on: Friday 22 November 19 15:32 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon and thank you in advance for any help that can be given.

On an ancestor's will (Ambrose White d. 16/04/1920) he is shown as living in a house called "Trevone" on Brixton Terrace, Exmouth.

Looking at a 1902 Kelly's directory seems to show that Brixton Terrace was off Exeter Road, however, looking at old maps, I have not been able to find Brixton Terrace.  This is confirmed by the 1911 census entry for Ambrose.

I would be grateful if someone could tell me where Brixton Terrace is or what happened to it please.

Thank you,

Nic

Was it definitely "off" Exeter Road, or might it have been a row of houses on Exeter Rd?

Have you looked at the family's 1911 census entry?

Just what I was writing. It was quite common in some places for houses to be identified within a terrace rather than by street number and a quick look on Street View suggests that there are developements of that type in Exeter Road. The row is probably still there with a terracotta plaque with the terrace name burried under paint or pebbledash.

Looking at the transcript from Kelly's 1902, which I imagine is the one that you have seen, I read the entries as being Brixton Terrace in Exeter Road.

Thanks avm228 / Chilterbirder - hadn't thought of that!  You would think that I would have stopped assuming things by now!   ::)

1911 does say Brixton Terrace, Exeter Road so it seems likely that you are right.  Any idea how I might find the house?

Sometimes Streetview assists if the name of the terrace can still be seen.

Sometimes old newspaper or directory references assist in placing by proximity to a particular junction etc.

Ditto census enumerator routes.

Alas, that is likely to be the case.  I will have a look on Street View later in case their is an elusive plaque!

You will need to identify known residents of the terrace on the nearest census and see if that gives you a clue.

In 1901 Brixton Terrace follows on from the "Lawn", Exeter Road, Clifton Terrace and bunch of other terraces including Exton, Aylesbury, Hillisboro etc which are shown on this map https://maps.nls.uk/view/101444932#zoom=6&lat=4774&lon=4308&layers=BT
