I’ve started looking into my family tree, and I’m really enjoying the process and the tidbits of information I’m uncovering along the way. This weekend I’ve been working on my father’s side of the family - I should maybe mention that I no longer have grandparents on this side to sense check things with!
This side of the family are Scottish so I’ve been using the Scotland’s People website to help my search - I’ve found it to be pretty thorough and meets my needs very well for the most part. But I’ve hit a bit of a brick wall, and would appreciate guidance if possible from those more experienced than myself.
Here’s the situation. My great great grandparents were Jane (sometimes called Jeanie) Reid and David McClintick. They had three daughters together - the first born in 1897 prior to their marriage in 1898. Their third and final daughter was born in 1902. In 1909, Jane filed for divorce from David, and the document stated that his “present address is unknown”. I’ve been unable to find on Scotland’s People any evidence of death or remarriage, which has led me to believe he may have left the country (even if just to England). I am struggling to know how to tackle the search results on Ancestry UK... I’ve got several McClintocks (different spelling) including in Canada and the United States but have struggled to find one whose age/dates seem to line up properly.
Does anybody have any advice for me finding where this ancestor ended up? One thing I wondered was whether there is some sort of database of people leaving Scotland e.g. by boat (although of course this wouldn’t help if he moved to England). I’d really appreciate any searching tips.
