Two Welsh vicars - father & son, both named David Evans
« on: Wednesday 04 December 19 07:34 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping that somebody has access to a Crockford's Clerical Dictionary and can help me with these.

The elder simply David Evans was born 1838/9 but gives various places of birth on the Wales censuses:- Pontypridd, New Bridge, Egwysilan ?? all in Glamorganshire. He married Mary Davies in Brecon in 1867. In 1911 he was vicar at Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa near Llanfyllin. I cannot find him reliably in a census before 1871.

They had two sons both born in Norfolk. The elder was David Richard Evans b Wymondham, Norfolk 1868. married 1900 Julia Jordan. He studied modern history at Oxford and took holy orders and was a vicar at Wanstead Orphan Infant Asylum in 1901. In 1911 he was vicar of St Marys Fownhope.

Any further information on these would be very gratefully received.

Have you got his fathers name/occupation from the marriage?

Where he was residing at the time and witness names could all be helpful.

If you have access to Ancestry then Crockford's Directories are available to view.

Years available - 1868, 1874, 1885, 1898, 1908 and 1932

Card Catalogue = UK, Crockford's Clerical Directories

1911 census entry says that David and Mary have 3 children, all still alive.

Thanks for these observations - finally found the Crockfords abbreviation page and the various entries. I hadn't noticed the three children alive on the 1911 census for David snr, but noted a possible double appearance on the 1861 census where as well as being at the ecclesiastical college he was perhaps married to a Charlotte Bishop with an infant daughter. It seems Charlotte may have died in 1862, so even more reason to get the marriage certificate. The 1891 census gives his place of birth as Llanwonno another bit of what became Pontypridd.

The Western Mail of 4 Dec 1922 under Recent Wills reported "The Rev. David Evans, of The Vicarage, Pont Dolanog, Welshpool, vicar there since 1879, who died October 27 last . . . "  Legacy to a servant, remainder to his wife for life, then the three sons.

Wrexham Guardian 5 April 1979 "Pont-Dolanog.  The living of this parish, in the gift of the Lord Bishop of St. Asaph, was recently presented to the Rev. - Evans, curate of Gwyddelwern, near Corwen."
