Looks like ‘Inmate’ to me.
Is he in an institution? I have seen soldiers described as ‘inmate’ too.

I thought inmate as well - Could you let us know the census year and where he is so we can compare the other entries?

Inmate from me too.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Think it is 1841 where he was living with his wife and family, does look like inmate but the person above is an AG LAB.

1841
Thomas 25
Elizabeth 25
William 4
Emma 2
Hannah 7 months

Louisa Maud

Is it farm?, if you look above at the word farmer the I of what is supposed to be inmate and the F of farmer is very similar, just a thought

From the OED, Inmate;  In early use, One admitted for a consideration to reside in a house occupied or rented by another; a lodger or subtenant.
Inmate; In relation to the house or dwelling-place: An occupant along with others, one of the family or company who occupy a house or other abode; hence sometimes simply = Indweller, inhabitant, occupier.

The word seems to have been crossed out a number of times elsewhere in the ED - An example attached from F M P which  is clearer and does look like inmate  :-\

To All,
Thank you for your input.
I thought myself it was inmate, but then i would think how could he be an inmate.
I think you may have got it right Stan, He is a son in law of the farmer.
He married the farmers daughter and is living there working on the farm.
It is the 1841 census and the way you said about a person living with a family is sometimes called an Inmate, I think that is exactly what I have here. I have not heard of that description before so I've learnt something new today.
Thank You one and all, Merry Christmas to all :)
