Vera Bright Tobi Hats New York about 1960
« on: Thursday 12 December 19 12:45 GMT (UK) »
Vera or Polly Bright immigrated to New York in 1948 from Redhill, Surrey and was declared an American Citizen in 1954. Vera created a business called Tobi Hats and became very wealthy but later was bankrupted. Can I find a New York bankruptcy as we do with the London Gazette ? Vera died about January 1967, but again no reference as she is said to have married to an Admiral. In a Logansport, Indiana newspaper ( her sister Joyce Dawson nee Nightingale lived there) Vera's death is recorded but still as Mrs Bright.

Regarding Vera Bright's death - do you know where she died, or was living last? Manhattan?

Regarding the bankruptcy, I've never looked for one. I seem to remember seeing announcements of bankruptcies in the newspaper, so if you know about what year it happened, you might find a newspaper announcement of it. - Or even an article if the company was well enough known.

The other way I would look would be to try to figure out what court the bankruptcy was filed in and then locate their records.

Thank you everyone for your information. I have not been able to complete the Fulton newspaper link.
Using newspapers on Find My Past produces to many results as an alternative. I have found in 1960 Vera Bright came to the UK and on her return gave an address at 419 Craig Avenue, Tottenville, Staten Island. The property is still there on Zillow.com.

The birth date given for the Vera Bright traveling to the UK in 1960 was 4 Jun. 1918, so it may be a different person.  The passenger list for the Vera who lived in Staten Island says her nationality was British, which wouldn't have been the case if she were a naturalized US citizen.

Here is a shortened link for the article from Fultonhistory.com:

1941 Oct.26 Vera Nightingale married Frank V G Royce at Carlisle, Cumbria, England.
The whole problem with Vera comes from her entry document where she says her name is Bright and her husband is Frank Bright wont be joining her in America, but Vera gives the same marriage date as the marriage to F V G Royce. A Frank Bright just doesn't exist in England from the information she gives.
My query is where and why did she call herself Bright. i have tracked down a son of her sister Joyce from Logansport, Indiana who now lives in England and in the New Year he may be able to find more information.
File of Vera Nightingale attached from a private site on Ancestry. Incorrect information. Cyril Royce wasn't a Barrister but a sewing machine engineer. Vera's Death 1967 not 1963.
It is the lower information I am trying to find viz. Tobi Hats (still trading) Admiral marriage.
