Thank you all for your inputs.   I am very grateful.

Judith has unearthed a distinct possibility, Prahran as a fruiterer.   I wish I could find a "Departure" reference from Hobart or Launceston!!

Could he have moved to Qld and married a Susan BUNCE?  They had two children, Hugh born 1885 and William 1887...............these details passed to me by a PM

For the moment,

For consideration:

Departures, Launceston, 10 Feb 1852, Victoria Packet for Melbourne
William Pinn
Ship to colony - Pestongee Bomangee

I only had a quick check, but couldn't find a William Pinn on any of that ship's voyages

Good Evening matthewj64,

Excellent research......my congratulations and thanks.

As far as I can ascertain there was only one PINN convict, George, and he arrived in NSW in 1831.
So on the balance of probabilities Prahran's William RENN, unearthed by judb, is a prime candidate.
It now seems sensible to pursue that lead 8)

For now,

Following on from Matthew's finding of the employer for William as John Charles STRACEY I thought Mr STRACEY would be worth a look.  He seems to have been quite a businessman,

These sightings, of course, may not be the same man.

1838 bankrupt, insolvent, Hobart, John Charles STRACEY,  auctioneer
1854 departure from Launceston to Melbourne Mr STRACEY, (no given name shown), cabin passenger. (This is from the Tasmanian Names site and I can't get the image to show so can't be sure)
1856 Electoral Roll, St Kilda (suburb of Melbourne)
John Charles STRACEY, Inkerman Rd, auctioneer, householder
There's quite a bit more on him but these mentions at least show that William may have known his former boss in Melbourne.
