Brilliant New Website

Hi Rootschatters,
I thought I'd share my little success story with you in case there are other people who are having the same trouble as I did.
After hitting brickwall after brickwall trying to locate my grandmother's birth certificate (not showing up on 1837online or Freebmd), a friend in my local Family History Society put me onto www.volumesandpages.co.uk
They replied to my email within hours and conducted a search for me at the Family Record Centre in London the next day!!  With results   :o
My past experiences with professional genealogists have not always been happy ones but I found these people very friendly and was able to have a laugh with them along the way.
Hoping this will help someone else too.
Juliette   :)

Thanks Juliette,

I have used them today for the first time.

They broke down a brickwall within 4 hours.

Amazing site.

If you any more tips, please share them with us. You're a star

Hi Juliette,

Congratulations on your break through but as this a pay service I have moved your post to the sale section.

Regards,
Pam

It is also rather expensive!

Consider.  The Family Record Centre in Islington holds the entire GRO indexes in hundreds of large binders which can be searched free of charge by the general public.  Once a reference is found, the relevant certificate can be ordered for £7 including postage.

If you used this service to locate and order a certificate the cost would be £35!!!  Quite a difference!

I believe that the online indexes at 1837 online, are a photographic reproduction of the indexes held at the FRC. They are therefore exactly the same.!  They are pay to view, but I would suggest that it would take a great deal of time to use up £28 of credit!!!!

If  the reference that you required was missing from 1837 online for some reason, then I am sure that they might offer you a refund.  I have always found them most accommodating.

As a point of interest. The GRO indexes can be searched at any LDS Family History Centre worldwide, and County Record Offices in the UK.  Some of them are available online using the shared database of FreeBMD and Ancestry.co.uk.  Once the reference is located, certificates can be ordered online at the General Record Office.

Rick's right - I looked at their 'Beginners Family Package 2', which offers 8 certificates (a birth cert, parents marriage cert and grandparents' marriage cert and birth certs) and relevant census info for £235.  Just ordering 8 certs yourself would cost £56 direct from the GRO, so the balance, for research costs, seems a little expensive.

cheers

Paul

...and whatsmore their "packages" defeat the purpose of family history research in my opinion. It's far more enjoyable and rewarding to do it yourself. And do you know what else is rewarding as a result of doing it yourself? SAVING MONEY!!

One other place where the complete BMD indexes are avaiable online and you have the choice of pay-per-view or a one year subscription:

http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk

The site also has other stuff included in the subscription (Various census transcriptions, trade, PO & landowner directories as well as some London parish records).

A one year subscription is quite expensive (£69) but not as expensive as a professional researcher  ;)

Hello folks,

I just thought I would mention that I have used Volumes and Pages, in fact only in the last few days :

They searched 5 years either side to find a birth for me. That's 10 years and 40 binders for £ 14.95.

They gave me details of each and every entry for each quarter of each year.

I think that's pretty good value. I would never have been able to get to London and if the online resources are not up to speed, I think this is a great service mate.

Re Volumes and Pages - if no entry  is found is there a refund? Couldn't find that info on their web-site.  Thanks.
