How do I do a triangulation ? Is it the same as looking at shared matches then their shared mttches

Not really, brigidmac. At Ancestry you cannot triangulate in the true sense of the word, though shared matches certainly help.

Here is a guide to triangulation at myheritagedna (hope you took advantage of their recent offer to provide free tools for new uploads).

I'm far too computer illiterate to do anything like that .

I manage 3 DNA s mine my mum's & paternal aunt but only on ancestry.
I once tried to download my results into something but my  tablet wouldn't allow it and I'd be frightened of losing all data .

I.ll carry on with my amateur hit and miss matches for now

Quite proud of what I have proved and confirmed so far . .

Thanks 4 your comments .

My theory has worked on a different mystery

My mum's DNA was matching to different trees that all had surnames connected to a multi- bigamist b 1857

No obvious connections to any of his wives or his own family name or aliases

Today I found a 15cm match for myself which actually has one of the descendants on her tree from the Birkenhead marriage which is where my great gran lived .

and another tree match at 23cm  with the man's father and brother ( or himself and 1of his aliases ) which mutually shares with my mum and other trees with same surnames and possible children of this man in the countries he lived in I don't have other obvious connections to Quebec Durban South Africa.ir British Columbia

Does that make sense ?

So here's a  party game  ::)

Ask friends or fellow rootschatters from a different country for ,5 less
common.names from.one branch of their tree then put those 5 names 1 by 1 into your DNA name search

How many matches do  you  get with those names

I'm assuming you'd get 0 to 2 matches unless you have huge tree

Let me know your results please so I can see what is more than s coincidence for random names

Or if you discover you are distantly related to a person who has none of the same tree names as yourself

Happy fishing
