Occupation "Poor Law Service"
« on: Sunday 22 December 19 19:53 GMT (UK) »
I came across the 1906 marriage of Charles Henry Catt and Mary Jane Gill in Lancashire.  The occupation of both the groom and the bride was given as "Poor Law Service"   Does anyone know what this is?

Employed at a workhouse? Can you find them on 1901 and 1911 census to see what their occupations were then?

Put "Poor Law Service" as just the occupation in the 1911 census and you will see various occupations.
Charles Henry Catt and Mary Jane Gill don't seem to be in either the 1901 or 1911 censuses.

I cannot find them in the 1901 or 1911 census.  He is working as a Labourer when his daughter is christened in 1908.

In 1911 try looking under CAWS (Ancestry) or CATTS (FindMyPast). It's very poorly written.

I posted this on the common room board as I hadn't found this board at that time

In the 1911 census he is "Army Pensioner & Master Sgt C Clerk" living in Chesterfield
Spelling can be Catt, Catts or Catte
