Locksmith . whitesmith
« on: Monday 23 December 19 19:06 GMT (UK) »
I have a man who at his second marriage in 1856 says his father is a whitesmith.

His first marriage was in 1828 so there are no details on that.
I have only found one possible father in the right area, but he is a locksmith.
Could that fit ?

No pun intended?  ;D

They are different trades but what year is this person a locksmith?

Could it be bad writing.

A whitesmith is a metal worker who deals in tin, light metals and white enamelled goods. A jobbing tinsmith working for an ironmonger repairing plated sheet metal and hollow-ware goods. A worker in iron who finishes or polishes the work, in distinction from one who forges it
You could have searched Rootschat. There is a "search rootschat" button at the top of the screen, and selecting "Occupational Interests" for the search and entering whitesmith you get all the postings there have been on whitesmith. Alternatively there is an entry for Whitesmith in the Rootschat Lexicon at http://surname.rootschat.com/lexicon/index.php

Thanks, I had already found what a whitesmith was, but I couldn't find any matching baptisms in the right area and time, only a father who was a locksmith.
Thomas Latham bapt c 1807 Rainford, father William, locksmith , mother Lydia , also other children
Lancs online parish clerks.
William born Rainford still alive in 1851 in Rainford. Also there is neice Lydia.

I dont have exact details to hand at the moment.

My whitesmith ancestor was also variously described as a smith, a coachsmith, a coach spring maker, and an engineer.
