Harle Family (Rainham/Raynham Hall)
« on: Tuesday 24 December 19 08:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi!

My paternal grandmother’s maiden name was Harle, I believed derived from Dutch Van Harle. I’ve gone back as far as Harry (Van) Harle in 1845 who’s son George Harle was married to Scottish Rachel Graham. That’s as far as I’ve gone back.
I have reliably been told by my cousin that her late father George Harle found paper work years ago connecting the family to John Harle who owned Rainham Hall in Essex but she or I have drawn a blank!  This hall is seen as Scrooge’s home on BBC’s adaptation of a Christmas Carol.
If anyone can help with the Harle line, I’ll be eternally grateful as for a while now we’ve hit a brick wall.
Thanks!

Thanks for getting back to me so quick!

George Henry Harle (1872-1942) born in India married Rachel Alice Graham (1884-) in 1904 in India.

I believe his father Harry was born in Holland in approx 1845 and maybe
Van Harle.  But what I have is scant at best following that family line

Harry is a sergeant of police on Henry George's 1874 baptismal entry - mother Sarah.

The baptismal entry for a Louisa Jane Harle, 20 Oct 1872, Allahabad Cantonment, shows parents Harry and Sarah - Harry's "Quality, Trade or Profession is "Private, H M 2/19 Regt".

|Is this the 2nd Regt. of Foot who were in India at this time?

First, a warm welcome to Rootscat.

Re. John Harle, are we talking about Captain John Harle, 1688-1742 - one of six brothers?

Did George Henry’s father die young(ish)?

When GH Harle married Rachel Graham in 1905 his father’s name was entered as “Christian name not known (Harle)”.
