Johnson’s Row Hurst Hill/Sedgley
« on: Monday 30 December 19 14:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I’m hoping someone can point me in the direction of a photo of the cottages in Johnson’s Row, which I think have now disappeared, and also tell me where they were in relation to the modern map.

I’ve looked online myself, but only seem to get articles about dear old Boris’ row with his girlfriend!

Thanks

According to the 1881 census Johnson's Row came after Beacon Street, see https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=18&lat=52.5479&lon=-2.1102&layers=168&right=BingHyb

The Row is not marked on any maps, but could be the houses near the Old Limestone Shaft, as there are 15 houses in the census and 15 houses near the Shaft.

Hi,

As soon as I saw your post I knew I had seen an old photo of this area (I am local, I live about a minutes walk away  ;D)

This is the only photo I can find of "old" Johnson Street (although it is incorrectly listed at JohnsTon Street on the link  ::). I'm not sure if it shows the cottages you are looking for, possibly one on the right foreground.

The cottages at the far end of the photo (to the right of the person walking) are still standing, they are called "Smith's Row".  The buildings on the near right are now gone and have been replaced by a row of shops, and the ones on the left have been demolished and the area grassed over.

Here's a view of how it is today.

This shows it as it is now from a similar angle to the old photo

Johnsons Row is different to Johnsons Street in the 1881 Census, they are two separate locations.

So much for me being the "local expert"  ;D ;D ;D
I will have a dig around for anything else, and a look next time I walk the dog up there  ;)

Thanks for your efforts. My understanding is that this was a row of old cottages, almost certainly pre 19th century, in traditional form, with pig stys at the back.

I’m not sure if that helps.

Johnson's Row was a row of terraced houses which ran alongside a rough footpath running from opposite Hurst Hill Post Office, at the end of Hollywell Street, to what is now Miller Crescent.  They were still occupied by some very poor families in the very early 1950s, but around that time they became derelict and had almost certainly gone by the mid 50s.  The building/clubhouse known as the Sons of Rest was built opposite them.  The site was cleared when Hackett Close was constructed, but I believe the footpath still exists.

Sincere Apologies to anyone I have misled.  After further searching my old notes, I note that my old memories were incorrect.  The Row described in my previous post was Stanley's Row, Not Johnsons Row
