Thank you both for your efforts, oldohiohome and Sandra.

I've gone back to some sources in France to see if there are any further clues. A lot of these airmen kept in touch with those who helped them.

Lt. Smith is in the back row, second from right.

I hope this helps given that no "Winnie" has shown up.

Smith's civilian address was 227 South 6th Street, Montebello, Ca

California Death Index
Name:    James H Smith
Social Security #:    524109340
Gender:    Male
Birth Date:    22 Sep 1918
Birth Place:    Colorado
Death Date:    22 Apr 1977
Death Place:    Orange

I think you can eliminate this man. He was an electrician in the US Navy starting 5 January 1942, was admitted to a WWII hospital in June 1942, injured in the line of duty. discharged and returned to duty.

His service number was 39008611

1942 contact person was his mother Anna Mary Smith in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was only 5'6" and weighed 135 lb, blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion

In 1940 he was boarding in Alamosa, Colorado, his occupation was "serviceman, electrician"

He is buried in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, with his wife Patricia Ann.

sources
US WWII Young Men's Draft Cards
US Veterans Gravesites
US WWII Hospital Admission files
1940 Census of Alamosa, Colorado

edit to add: the man in the picture is heavier than 135 lb and looks taller than 5'6".

I hope this helps given that no "Winnie" has shown up.

Smith's civilian address was 227 South 6th Street, Montebello, Ca

DTD
From at least 1935 until at least 1948, that address was the residence of Robert N Litchford, father of Winnie F Litchford, born (probably 3 October) 1921 in Tennessee.

1940 Census, Montebello CA
at 227 South 6th Street.

Robert N Litchford and family, including
Winnie Litchford, 18, marital status: "M?" born in Tennessee, a seamstress, 4 years of high school
They lived at the same address in 1935

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K971-5BS

Their 1930 census with her middle initial "F"
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XC8J-435

-----
1946 California Voter Registration
227 S 6th St, Los Angeles County
Robert N Litchford
Mrs Winnie F Smith, declines to state party affiliation

----
maybe explaining the "M?" for Winnie's marital status in 1940:

Marriage, Winifred F Litchford, age 16, of Montebello, and Kenneth N Irwin, 27 Nov 1937, Los Angeles CA
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K8VS-NT5

----------
Winnie apparently died 4 March 1983 in Yuba County, CA and is buried as Winnie Frances Litchford Jordan:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/116491813

I haven't found her marriage to Mr Jordan yet. But apparently, somewhere along the line, she married your James H Smith.

evidence that Winnie Litchford once was married to a man named Smith:
Marriage License, LA County
married 27 Jun 1947, Anaheim

bride: Winnie Frances Smith
address: 219 S 10th St, Montebello
age: 25, occupation: waitress
divorced, this is her third marriage
born: Memphis, Tennessee
maiden name: Winnie Frances Litchford
parents: Robert Nelton Litchford and Ethel Audry Rogers

groom: Max Hobert Casper, etc

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K8KN-MR5

[she is in the Montebello city directory in 1948 and 1950 at that address, as Mrs Winnie Smith. see earlier posts]

-----
and Winnie's death as Winnie F Jordan. a better source than findagrave, and with parents' names:
California, Death Index, 1940-1997

Name: Winnie Frances Jordan
Birth Date: 3 Oct 1921
Birth Place: Tennessee
Death Date: 4 Mar 1983
Death Place: Yuba
Mother's Maiden Name: Rogers
Father's Surname: Litchford
