William Muncey Newell b1843 to Mary Newell. Born Tadlow Beds or Hunts Workhouse?

My paternal G-Grandfather William Muncey Newell was, I always assumed, born in Tadlow, Beds because per parish register he was christened in Tadlow church 13 aug 1843. He was the illegitimate son of Mary Newell.

Tonight I found in a tree uploaded to Ancestry at

a tantalising mention that he was in fact born in Huntingdon Workhouse. Frustratingly though, there is no source for this info provided.

I have searched online for records of births in the Huntingdon Workhouse with no joy. Can someone point me in the right direction or provide confirmation and any details...

The General Register Office has the birth registration of a -

William Newell, Mar Qtr 1844, registration district Huntingdon Union, 14  194 - no mother's maiden name recorded. The absence of mother's maiden name often indicates illegitimacy.

Tadlow fell within the registration district of Caxton at this period.

Query - did your William marry Mary Brockett?

I did see this entry in GRO indexes, but it cannot be 'my' William Muncey Newell who was baptised 13 Aug 1843. It could be that the publisher/creator of the tree on Ancestry made the incorrect connection and thus that I should ignore it. The issue then is why no other plausible candidates exist in the GRO Index. I have tried quite hard...

Yes, 'my' William Muncey Newell married Mary Brockett. One of their children, Albert Edward Newell is my paternal grandfather.

I would be more inclined to accept the GRO record than an unsourced tree on Ancestry.From census what does he show as pob?

As you say your William was baptised in August 1843 so would not fit that 1844 birth. Have you seen the original parish register for the baptism or are you relying on the transcript

After some more hunting around I cannot find the christening/birth either in Ancestry or in FreeBMD. I am thus, I realise, relying purely on a typewritten transcript of 'Newell' entries I made myself back in about 1980. I cannot recall if I actually visited the church or whether the original register is in Beds County Record Office - I did numerous parishes. Those were the days before internet!!

My transcript records a baptism:

"13 Aug 1843 of William Muncey(?) Newell  s. of Mary Newell of Tadlow, single woman"

I think my next step needs to be to contact the Beds/Cambs folk to try to confirm my transcript.

Curious that this parishes records are not (yet) in FreeBMD or Ancestry...

Hi... Yes the 1844 birth is out as it is the birth on Jan 8th of William Newell to unmarried mother Caroline who was baptised 18th February 1844 in Godmanchester.
