St Mary's, Guildford, Surrey Parish Registers
« on: Saturday 04 January 20 21:10 GMT (UK) »
There seems to be a break in the available transcriptions for St Mary's, Guildford, Surrey between May 1753 and May 1755, when the new incumbent took over. Nor do there seem to be any Bishop's Transcripts covering this period.
Can anyone confirm this and possibly provide any information as to where I could locate the missing entries?

May I suggest that you contact the Surrey History Centre and ask them if they have the relevant records?

Link below to their contact page.

Familysearch do not have the records for that period in their catalogue

Parish registers
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/194188?availability=Family%20History%20Library
Baptisms, 1540-1753, 1755-1875. Marriages, 1540-1753. Banns, 1823-1886. Burials, 1540-1753, 1755-1812.

Having gone through the Familysearch microfilm copies of the original registers on their website there is obviously a gap of about two years. Curiously this gap is not shown on the West Surrey fhs transcription listings for this parish but I have yet to purchase the transcriptions of all the Guildford and nearby parishes from them just to prove there is a gap - seems a bit of a waste of money just to proveit.
I think the suggestion that I contact the Surrey History Centre is the way forward and for this suggestion I thank you.
Will keep you informed,
Kind regards,
sou45s73.

The West Surrey FHS disc I have shows a gap in baptism records between May 1753 and 1755. It states that there are no records for 1754.
Burials also show a gap between May 1753 and 1755, but here the record is completed from 'a transcript of unknown provenance'.
There are two marriages in April, and May of 1753, and one set of banns and two marriages in September and November of 1754. There may be entries missing from these two years, but the previous years are not especially busy for marriages.

Many thanks for your informative and speedy response. It looks like I will have to purchase the West Surrey fhs disc for Guildford and its surrounding parishes although I fear it will not help me for a baptism in 1754 at St Mary's for the missing period in the registers.
Although I have sent an email to the Surrey History Centre seeking clarification, from what you say about the details given with the CD disc, it is likely that the records are lost. We live in hope however!
Many thanks for your help.

Just heard back from the Surrey History Centre. They will reply within twenty working days. Let's hope it's sooner rather than later. Will keep everybody informed.

Dear All,
Just returned from a few days away in Northern Ireland and opened an email from the Surrey History Centre. Part of the response includes the following statement : "Sadly, I’m afraid these entries are missing.  There is a note in the catalogue to this register (SHC Ref GUM/1/4) which states:
Register recording baptisms and burials.  [Note:  when this register was examined in 1927, it began in 1753 and included marriages for Jan-Mar 1754.  These pages are now missing]
It looks therefore that there is definitely a gap in the registers.
Nevertheless, thank you all for your help, suggestions and replies. All much appreciated.
Kind regards, sou45s73
