Hi all,

when ships from europe arrived in SA, where there any kind of records kept by the local government of people that arrived? late 1800' to early 1900's

Your best bet is the Shipping records between the UK and South Africa found on Ancestry and Findmypast. Other than that it is in Newspaper shipping news but they generally only reported on upper class arrivals.

I've seen some early 1800's passenger arrival books in the archive in Cape Town but am not aware of any others.

There is a project on eggsa.com recording some shipping lists so keep an eye on that
