Help with death certificate writing please (Henry Waters)
« on: Friday 10 January 20 16:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I would appreciate help interrupting part of a death certificate I have received as attached.

For rank or profession I think it says “An army pensioner” 7 Ash Vale, Ash. If so I am content with that as the subject was living at Canal Embankment immediately after Ash Vale on the 1901 census.

For the cause of death I think the first word is Erysipelas
“Contagious acute disease of the skin and subcutaneous tissue caused by a species of hemolytic streptococcus and marked by localised inflammation and fever. Also called Saint Anthony's fire”

Source: http://www.rmhh.co.uk/illness.html

But I cannot read the second word so appreciate the help here.

If it helps he did not die at home but in the workhouse which given he had a contagious disease and workhouses acted in a medical capacity at this time seems fair enough to me.

Thank you
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Exhaustions?

I agree with the Pensioner and the address.

I think it says "Exhaustion" in the singular.  Compare with the "n" at the end of the name Monkton (or whatever the name of the certifying doctor was), and exhaustion would be a more normal word to use.....not that it makes much difference really.

Yes I see what you mean. looking at the rest of the certificate the clerk certainly liked finishing off words with a flourish.
