Yes, I looked on the map too. The only thing I could find slightly similar was Biggary Burn and Biggaryburn Cottage, so it may have something to do with the head of the burn. Of course the name is older than the map.
Thanks for your input.

I had a look at maps too. I did see a lot of place names around Tarbolton which were “something”head, so I presume it will have a meaning.

I agree that a contemporary map is needed. I couldn’t find one with a enough detail though. I will see what I have saved in my desktop favourites later if I get a chance.

I think the first letter B must be correct and probably or possibly the “head” at the end, however I expect there could be variations in the middle bit.  :)

“Burn” I think is a stream, and I assume “head” will have a different locational meaning. Biggary looks promising though. Could you post a link to where exactly you found that?  :)

According to this head is similar to ‘upper’ or ‘higher’:

It is under heid / hede.

Yes, burn is a stream, and the head is the upper part or the beginning of the stream.
Biggary burn runs into Tarbolton Loch to the north of the town. So the head would be closer to Biggaryburn cottage. Probably Glenhead.
See the link to the map above in reply no. 2

Found those places on the map.  ;)

The more I think about it the more I think that Biggary must be correct - it sounds so similar. I will see if I can dig anything up later.

Yes, the writing Bigriehead in the OPR is over 100 years earlier than the map, and the sound when it is said is similar, although the spelling has changed over time.
Thanks for adding some support to my thinking so far.
