1871 (and 1851?) lookup please - BROWN
« on: Saturday 20 August 05 18:16 BST (UK) »
Is anyone able to assist with an 1871 lookup please (and 1851 would be appreciated if available).
The family I am trying to find were living in Torrington, Devon in 1861 but could have moved around the country!

Joseph BROWN  b c1823 Shepton Mallet, Somerset
Ann Brown b c1823 Watford, Hertfordshire
John F Brown b c1851 Shepton Mallet
Mary A M Brown b c1853 Shepton Mallet
Sidney E B Brown b c1855 Amersham, Bucks
Alfred L B Brown b c1859 Somerset
Joseph E Brown b c1861 Great Torrington, Devon

Would be interest to know if there are any other family members by 1871.

Thanks

JEAN

Thank you for the 1871 results Tanja.  It has proved very helpful and I have been able to make some progress.

All I need now is to trace them in 1851.

looking at the 1861 cencus ephriam was still alive and the m was his wife miriam
Ephraim Brown abt 1779  Croscombe, Somerset, England Head  Shepton Mallet  Somerset
Mariam Brown abt 1795  Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England Wife  Shepton Mallet  Somerset
Elizabeth Cornish abt 1845  Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England Niece  Shepton Mallet  Somerset
Ann Reason abt 1806  Devizes, Wiltshire, England Daughter  Shepton Mallet  Somerset

daughter ann is down as married and neice elizabeth is unmarried.
judging by the age difference i would assume miriam was his second wife

This is a long shot, but the nearest match I could find. All the following were born out of county.

1841

HO 107/378/7  -  Bristol, St. Philip and Jacob Without
Sch. 16, Pages 13 and 14
Bayntons Buildings

BROWN
Ephraim - 62 - shoemaker
Maryann - 45 - weaver
Maryann - 16 - weaver
Francis - 15 - labourer
Ellen - 11
Phoebe - 9
Isaiah??  - 6
Matilda - 4

Sue

as found by suepip on the somerset board.wonder if the 18yr old pauper daughter on 51 was phoebe and the 14 yr old  matilda?? just a thought but you have sue to thank for the look up unfotunately i dont have 1841 cencus

Thank you for that info.

I somehow think Miriam/Mariam/Maryann could well be the same person - sometimes the writing has been read wrongly when transcribing the censuses and ages and birthdates do seem to vary from one census to the next - most of the other details seem to fit - I will use this info to dig a bit further.
