1939 Register - labeled as "Invalid"
« on: Wednesday 15 January 20 03:36 GMT (UK) »
I have one or two people, in separate families, where the wife, or daughter, is under the personal occupation, labeled as "Invalid"

Is there any way of determining what the invalidity might have been, or was it a way of getting rid of awkward questions from the interrogator?

Any information, including negative, will be helpful.

It might be revealed as the cause of their death on their death certificate, but the complaint that caused their death might not have been the cause of their invalidity, if that makes sense.
Death records I found recently for two teenage brothers in the 1800s showed one died of fits/convulsions (his younger sister died of epilepsy 30 years later) and the other died of tuberculosis. I imagine they might both have been seen as invalids for a while before they died.

I think as far as the 1939 register was concerned it related to your occupation.
So most people would have a job,the alternative would be that you can't work due to being an "invalid".

Maybe the 1921 register which is out in a couple of years will help with what type of disabilty that person had.

Thank you both for that information.

Liza115, as yet I have not got around to getting death certificates for many of the ancestors, so cannot say anything there.

carol8353, in both cases, it was the wife who was the invalid, and the 1911 census has them as domestic duties, or no mention of occupation.

Most annoying.

Again, many thanks for your help.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but don't pin your hopes on the 1921 census, it doesn't include information on disabilities  :(
