Glenvorn?
« on: Wednesday 15 January 20 07:11 GMT (UK) »
I wish these relatives would stop moving to these tiny out-the-way cottages in the middle of nowhere that I can't find :D Judging on past form, I'm going to guess that someone will locate this in about a second and wonder why I'm such a map-reading numpty.

Okay, folks, does anyone know where Glenvorn is? All I have is it's in the parish of Ewes. I'm getting no Google hits for it, and if it's been slightly mis-spelled like my last request I don't know how to tweak it to get a valid place name. There's nothing that looks similar, but reading unfamiliar maps... my eyes could just be drifting over it and I wouldn't know.
Ancestral names: Lewis, Watson, Hetherington, Barclay, Clark, Regan, Hunter, Murray, Robson, Todd, Carney, Comerford, Urwin, Rayson, White, Purves, Biggins, Wilson, Gibson, Graham, Curry, Kennedy, Greenlaw, Waldie, Armstrong, Hodgson, Harle, Wild, Monkhouse, Donald, Allen, Bowie, Cowe, Ogilvie, Barnes, Pattinson, Williamson, Hogg, Denholm, Kirkwood and Hewitt

My eyes finally landed on a Glenvarren. Could it be that? It's the only thing that looks even slightly close to me.

Is it a transcribed entry or hand written?

What is the date of the event? If it's handwritten, please post a copy of it.

Glenvarren looks quite probable. Generally speaking, consonant sounds change less than vowel sounds, and it matches gl*nv*r*n.

See https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2146378

However Glenvarren Cottage is shown on the second edittion of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map
https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=55.2611&lon=-2.9624&layers=6&b=1 but not on the first edition
https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=55.2611&lon=-2.9624&layers=5&b=1 so it was evidently built after the area was surveyed in 1858.

The only mention of Glenvarren in the Name Books is Glenvarren Sike, which is the burn that flows north-eastwards to enter the Mosspaul Burn near Fiddleton Bankhead.

So I think it is likely that your folk lived in a farm or croft near Glenvarren Sike. This may have been on the site where Glenvarren Cottage was built, but wherever it was, it had disappeared before the middle of the 19th century.

You might find a definitive answer in the Buccleuch Estate muniments - there might be plans or rental rolls. There are papers of the Montagu-Douglas-Scott family in the National Records of Scotland, reference starting GD224, but it would take a while to read through all the cataologue entries to see if there is anything useful for you. https://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/welcome.aspx

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

One can see how Glenvarren could be badly written/interpreted as Glenvorn.  We really do need to see the original.

Hello

The "Parish of Ewes" is spread about.

Yes, Duke of Buccleuch; Thomas Beattie and John / William Elliot were property owners.

Have you tried early 20th Century Scottish Valuation volumes for Dumfrieshire (try Ewart Library & Archives, Dumfries) which usually list every property (as long as a house name has not been changed, changed to a number, or been demolished)?
