Who is the Joseph Wilding Clarke “shoe & boot ma” in the directory for Burnham, Essex 1862 & 1867?

That must be his father. He was a shoemaker in Burnham. His ‘wife’ was Maria Wilding.

In 1851 he is living at 37 Broad Street. Finsbsury

In 1861 a Joseph Clarke, haircutter, born Howton Suffolk  :-\ is living at 17 Broad Street, Finsbury With him is his wife Fanny, whose place of birth is given as 37 Broad Street.  RG 9 / 167 / 108/14. There are two daughters, whose place of birth is dittoed to their mother's.

Difficult to see how Burnham, Essex could become Howton, Suffolk, but yes that must be him! Thanks.

Is 'Howton, Suffolk' actually Houghton, Suffolk?

Added: No - Houghton Hall is Norfolk.

Is it Howton or Hawton, and where?

Excellent! That confirms he’s the brother of David Wilding Clarke in Kettering. Perhaps he moved up to live with him.
